Children’s Programs

Children and Family Services provides programs that give military families the opportunity to connect with other military families who are experiencing the same challenges in life such as deployments and postings. Programs such as Dad & Me give fathers the chance to spend some quality time with their children while enjoying various activities around the Halifax area.

For both new moms and moms that are new to the area Parent & Tot gives you the chance to meet and connect with other moms who live the same lifestyle that you do. It is a great way to make new friends, learn about the community and have some fun with your children.

Child and Family Services also provides monthly family activities where families can come out and socialize while trying a new activity with the whole family. This is a great way for families who may not have the chance to get together. These activities give families the chance to connect and create new friendships and support systems for when the unexpected deployments or postings happen.

Child and Family Services programs are designed to promote positive child/parent interactions, enhance parenting skills, and promote healthy child development. This is accomplished through programs such as Parent & Tot, Dad & Me, Gymboree, Parenting Workshops, and Monthly Family Activities.

Casual care provides affordable quality child care for parents to participate in activities provided by the H&R MFRC, to attend meeting/appointments without young children, Saturday sessions, and a break especially during a work related separation (Respite).

Casual Care
Mon – Fri 9 AM – Noon and 1 PM – 4 PM
$5.00 per hour under 18 months, $4.00 per hour 18 months and older

Need some time for “you” or have an appointment? Perhaps you have some shopping to do. We have the answer. The MFRC offers Casual Childcare. This program requires minimum registration to run and you must be preregistered.

Saturday Casual Care (ages 0-12)
Selected Saturdays from 10am-3pm
Registration is required by the Wednesday before the session.
Fee: $5/hour/child for children 18 months and younger and $4/hour/child for children over 18 months.

This popular service is provided by staff and is for children 3 months to 12 years. It gives you an opportunity to go grocery shopping, run errands, clean the house, have lunch with a friend, get a massage, go home for a nap…Please provide snacks and lunch for your children, NO NUTS PLEASE. Please provide necessary clothing and items for your child(ren), i.e.- Appropriate indoor and outdoor clothing/footwear, diapers, wipes, change of clothes, bottles, etc. Please label your child supplies (Bags, Bottles, Cups) with their name!

Part-day Preschool Program
This program is licensed for 24 children. The staff to children ratio is 1:12. We provide an active program with stimulating activities and an environment which is designed to enhance all areas of child development. We offer age appropriate toys and equipment, arts & crafts, outdoor activities, field trips and special events.

3 Day English (4 – 5 years): Mon, Wed & Fri ~ $95/month ($100 civilian)
2 Day English (3 – 4 years): Tues & Thurs ~ $75/month ($80 civilian)

Program Registration Information

Unless otherwise listed, programs and events at the Halifax site are located in the Piers Military Community Centre, Bldg 106 Windsor Park and programs at the Shearwater site are located at Hampton Gray Memorial building, in Shearwater. The program location is listed in each program description on the calendars.

Registration: Please pre-register and pre-pay for MFRC programs – including Childcare. Registration is not complete until participants have paid for the program/event. Spaces are only reserved for paid participants. You can register and pay for any program at whichever site is more convenient for you – Halifax or Shearwater.
