Das Was Fun! Oktoberfest 2015

Residents geared up for fall by celebrating ‘Halifax Oktoberfest’ on Saturday, September 26, at the Halifax waterfront. The event had quite a festive atmosphere as people played games that were set up and staffed by our very own Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre (H&R MFRC) volunteers. Visitors also had the opportunity to listen to live music and indulge in a wide variety of German food and drink. The weather was perfect, hot and sunny, for the annual outdoor party that commemorates German-Canadian heritage.

There were over a dozen family-friendly games for kids to play in the MFRC run area during ‘Kinder-fest’ which ran from 11am until 6pm. All proceeds from the games supported our MFRC, which is a registered charity that offers a variety of programs to support military families, including while members are deployed overseas.

Many different groups came out in support of the event and everyone was enjoying the festive atmosphere. The live music was provided by Die Brewmeister, a brass quintet of seasoned musicians who took the opportunity to wear their best Bavarian clothing while belting out a variety of songs from top 40 classics to traditional polkas.

Members of the group, Doxies of the Maritimes also came out to join in on the festivities. They are a Facebook based wiener dog group. The Dachshund owners brought their dogs to enjoy the sunshine. Many of them were dressed up for the event as well.

Towards the end of the day there were some games for the adults. Everyone was entertained to see the Pretzel Toss played by some folks who really got into the festive mood. The winners received a hearty round of applause.
