Children’s Programs

Children’s Services provides programs and services to help military families face the challenges and adjustments that can come with the unique military lifestyle. These programs and services support child development and are designed to promote positive child/parent interactions, enhance parenting skills, and encourage family time. Participation in our activities also provides the opportunity for families to develop relationships with other military families.

Program Registration Information

Unless otherwise listed, programs and events at the Halifax site are located in the Piers Military Community Centre, Building 106, Windsor Park. Programs at the Shearwater site are located at Hampton Gray Memorial Building, in Shearwater.

Registration: Requirements for pre-registration vary per program or workshop.

Registration is not complete until participants have paid for the program/event. Spaces are only reserved for paid participants. You can register and pay for any program at whichever site is more convenient for you – Halifax or Shearwater. We also accept credit and debit cards for payment over $5 per transaction.

Casual Care

Halifax and Shearwater Site

The Casual care program provides affordable quality child care for parents to participate in activities provided by the H&R MFRC, to attend meeting/appointments or to have a break, especially during a work related separation. Parents can also download the H&R MFRC Casual Care Handbook to review prior to your first session.

Shearwater Casual Care registration can be done through the casual care classroom at 902-720-1038. For special arrangements please contact the Casual Care Coordinator at: 902-720-1040.

New Baby

Halifax and Shearwater Site

For pregnant mothers, and parents and babies 12 months and under.

Mothers “to be” in last trimester and parents with babies up to 12 months Spend your Thursday mornings connecting with other expecting moms and parents of babies up to 12 months at our New Baby Program. Becoming a new parent is filled with joys and challenges and what better way to embrace this exciting time by sharing information and offering support to each other. Take advantage of our warm and comfortable environment and learn about baby friendly activities, development and self-care.

This program will be available in September 2017 at the following times:

Shearwater: Thursdays from 9:30 - 11:30am

Halifax: Wednesdays from 9:30 - 11:30am

Play & Learn

Shearwater Site

Ages: Best suited for children ages 12 months to 5 years, but all ages under 5 are welcome.

Play and Learn Parents with children 5 years and under It’s time to play! Children bring your parent and join us as we explore the world through art, messy play, gross motor play and story time. We even have a light snack to enjoy. Parents can also gain tips and ideas around parenting challenges. Parents and Children you should come prepared to get MESSY together! There is limited space for this program registration in advance in required.

Dates: Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:30 - 11:30am

Free Friday Play

Shearwater site

Parents and children will have free access to the toys and art materials in the space however, a facilitator will not be present. Parents are responsible for snack, if desired, and clean up of the space. Best suited for children twelve months to five years.

Halifax Gymboree

Halifax Site

Ages: 12 months to 5 years.

This program is a great opportunity for you and your children to come out, get active, and play together with other children and their families. Some activities provided include climbing mats, scooters, large balls, tunnels, hula hoops, ride-on toys, parachutes, bean bags, and more. Snack will be provided.

Tuesday and Thursdays, 9:30 - 11:30am

Shearwater Site

Spend your Saturday mornings this winter getting active by playing in a gym filled with trikes, riding toys, balls, and other fun toys! A light snack will be provided for the children. Not only will children have the opportunity to interact with other kids, it’s also a great way for parents to get to know your community and meet other military families.

This program will be available in January 2018.

Monthly family activities

Various Locations

These activities offer families the opportunity to come out and socialize while trying a new activity, and give families the chance to connect and create new friendships and support systems for when the unexpected deployments or postings happen.
