Outreach Updates

It’s February…the shortest month in the year! We’re “coasting” towards the spring from the mildest winter I can remember (and I’m old). Even despite this season’s mild temperatures, Outreach Services was still able to help plan some good old-fashioned winter activities, especially in Pictou. Military families of 144 CEF Pictou were busy with a family skate on January 27 and are now preparing for a family sleigh ride and hot chili supper on February 26.

In Sydney, we’ve had a short-term change in staff. Shane Barron has taken some leave and Charlie Reid will be filling this position until Shane’s return. Charlie has a long standing relationship with the Garrison and the H&R MFRC and he will be a great asset to all!

The Garrison is a busy spot during the month of February with an upcoming pre-deployment family briefing on Tuesday, February 7 at 6:30pm in the Officer’s Mess. Military members and families who are interested in learning more about the upcoming rotation to Afghanistan are invited to join us. This is a great opportunity to meet other family members, learn about available programs and services and find out when we will be hosting social activities and events.

Until next month, stay connected with us by visiting our website www.halifaxmfrc.ca and checking out our Facebook page for current programs and activities going on in your community!

Unit Family Rep Extravaganza Training
On January 23, nine Unit Family Reps participated in an Extravaganza Planning Meeting held at the Halifax Site MFRC. This was a significant milestone and a first for the UFRs to be given the opportunity to learn how to sell tickets to military families residing in some of our outreach communities.

The Annual Vacation Lottery Extravaganza is the H&R MFRC’s largest fundraiser with all proceeds going to support the programs and services offered to military families. With monthly draws for awesome vacation destinations, cash and bonus prizes, there is something for everyone in the Extravaganza! Sales begin February 13 to March 2. For more information call 902-427-7208 or visit www.halifaxmfrc.ca.

After the sleigh ride, everyone will warm up with some hot chocolate and a chili dinner. Don’t miss out on this great winter family activity fit for all ages!

Prevention Support and Intervention…there for you and your family!
Are you looking for information on parenting, reducing stress, managing separation, mental health issues or other topics? Do you need someone to talk to, but are unsure of where to turn? It’s okay if you don’t have all of the answers to these questions. The H&R MFRC is here to help you find answers!

The H&R MFRC has four Prevention, Support and Intervention social workers who are available to speak with military family members and provide information and/or support. We are able to offer a confidential service to help you and your family develop a plan and walk away with resources to help see that plan through. These services are accessible to all military families in the communities we serve across Nova Scotia, by just a quick phone call to our toll free 24 hour/7 day per week phone line, 1-888-753-8827.

Some people prefer having face-to-face meetings on a more therapeutic level. Military family members have access to social workers within their community (or nearby) through the Canadian Forces Member Assistance Program (CFMAP). This service is confidential and provided at no cost. To be connected with CFMAP, call 1-800-268-7708.

Nova Scotia also has a number of helplines setup to provide people with information and support for any topic. Some of them include:

Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868
The Gambling Helpline: 1-888-347-8888
Parent Helpline: 1-888-603-9100
Truro Help Line: 902-893-3333

Outreach Updates

The H&R MFRC is pleased to wish you and your family a very Happy New Year! Many of you are probably getting back into the swing of things after a hopefully enjoyable holiday break. Prior to and throughout the holiday season, the H&R MFRC was busy making appearances and participating in activities and events throughout the many communities we serve.

In Cape Breton, Shane attended a Remembrance Day Ceremony held at the Mira Road Elementary School. Children from this school later participated in an Annual Christmas Dinner held at the Fire Hall, where Shane and volunteer soldiers from the Sydney Garrison served dinner. Also in November, the H&R MFRC presented the Pre-Deployment Family Readiness Information Briefing in Halifax, Truro and Sydney, providing information and resources to military families who are preparing for a deployment.

With all of the holiday festivities said and done, the New Year and winter months will be filled with more upcoming events and activities. Beginning in January at the Cape Breton Site, Ready, Set, Know, a monthly program will launch where CF members and their families can meet to stay informed, supported and connected with current information and updates from the MFRC. The Cape Breton Site is also busy planning the popular Support the Troops hockey game featuring the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Call 902-563-7100 ext 7107 for more details on these upcoming programs happening in Cape Breton!

For some military families, the New Year may also mean the next rotation of a loved one’s deployment. We encourage families who are experiencing deployment to stay connected with the H&R MFRC for upcoming information briefings being held in the winter months. H&R MFRC briefings and resources are essential tools in ensuring your family is prepared. If your family is unable to attend an information briefing, please contact us and we will make sure you receive the appropriate information. We also encourage families to visit our website www.halifaxmfrc.ca and checkout out the Deployment Readiness Video Series from our friends at the Esquimalt MFRC. Here you will find more great tips and information to help you prepare for a loved one’s deployment.

Don’t forget you can always find us online! Checkout our Facebook and Twitter pages to find the most current program information. Stay connected as we continue to work with the outreach units and Unit Family Reps to plan social activities for military families in all of the communities we serve. All the best for now and once again Happy New Year from everyone here at your MFRC!

Are you Going Away?
The Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre (H&R MFRC) is proud to offer extensive deployment services for Regular and Reserve Force military families during any type of work-related separation or deployment. Whether you are preparing to go away for two weeks of training, or you are deploying for six months, it is essential that you keep your family informed, supported and connected throughout the deployment.

We understand the importance of preparing for a deployment and the many steps that you need to take to make sure you are ready to go. However, family members also find themselves preparing mentally and physically for your departure by going through checklists ahead of time and making sure your family and household are ready for your absence. Wouldn’t it be great to go on a deployment and know that your family is being kept in the loop, getting resources and participating in educational and fun activities?

Before you deploy make sure you fill out a Deployment Family Information Form or visit one of our locations and meet with deployment staff. We don’t know you are away if you don’t tell us. The Deployment Family Information Form is a simple tool we use to ensure your family receives up-to-date information while you are away. They will receive the latest on deployment happenings, including opportunities to connect with other families experiencing deployment, resources, workshops and family activities. Whether it is your mother, father, spouse, child or friend, we can communicate with whoever you identify as your family.

Let’s face it; life happens, and when it does the H&R MFRC is here to help your family know where to go for services, resources or if life throws them a curve ball. Staying connected during a deployment is vital and the H&R MFRC deployment professionals can lend a helping hand. Our Family Information and Referral Services Team (FIRST) is also available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week to answer any questions or concerns, provide program registration and referrals to emergency services.

We are only a phone call away. Stop by our Halifax, Shearwater or Cape Breton Site before you go on a deployment and fill out your Deployment Family Information Form to keep your family connected! Or, visit http://www.halifaxmfrc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/1-ship-deployment-form-draft-1.pdf and fax your form to 902-427-7794. For more information, call 902-427-7788 or 1-888-753-8827 toll free and visit www.halifaxmfrc.ca for a complete list of our deployment resources and videos.

The Princess Louise Fusiliers (PLF) held a Kid’s Christmas Party at the Halifax Garrison WO’s and Sgt’s Mess over the holidays. The party was awesome with more than 80 people attending. The event was organized by two volunteers, 2Lt Doug Brannen and MCpl Nazarene Gray of PLF, with help from parents and members attending. The H&R MFRC was able to contribute to the party by providing some activities for the children and prizes for the games. Children participated in a variety of activities including colouring and painting pictures, singalongs, dance games and music. And what Christmas party wouldn’t be a success without a visit from Santa!
