Volunteer

Come and get involved with your community! Volunteering leads to personal growth and development including resume building, meeting new people and learning new skills. Through the Halifax & Region MFRC’s Volunteer Development Program, military members, their families, and civilians are encouraged to contribute to the MFRC in a variety of ways.

Volunteers contribute on a daily basis to all areas of the Halifax & Region MFRC. Volunteers participate in program facilitation, office administration, newsletter articles and much more. Volunteering is a great way to contribute along with learning and using new skills.

Your MFRC has a full-time Volunteer Coordinator who is ready to answer all your questions and place you in an area of interest. Please call 427-7205, or 720-2002 to book an appointment or e-mail us volunteer@halifaxmfrc.ca

Family Volunteering

The Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre encourages family volunteering as a great way to spend time together, and promote intergenerational learning. A family can be anything you wish it to be. Your group could be composed of family members, friends or even co-workers. The goal is to bring together a group of people who are important in your life, to make a difference in someone else’s life. The Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre has many families volunteering with us for special events such as Homecomings, Unit Departures, Summer Carnival, and Holiday celebrations.

Youth Volunteering

The Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre has a dynamic youth volunteer core. Activities include special events, youth dances, Junior Leadership, Youth Council, March Break Camps, Summer Camps, and an extensive sport and tutorial program. Many of the activities take place at the Shearwater Site of the Halifax & Region MFRC. The Halifax site offers Junior Leadership opportunities during March Break and Summer Day Camp programs.

Special Event Volunteering

Throughout the year, the Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre offers a variety of fun filled activities for individuals and groups to become involved in. These events require a short-term commitment from 1 day to 1 week.

Activities can include but not be limited to:

  • Daycare and Youth Field Trips
  • DND Family Days
  • Holiday celebrations
  • Homecomings and departures
  • Spring Fashion Show
  • Summer carnival
  • Special projects and initiatives such as Operation We Care (the mailing of morale packages to troops away from home 4 times per year).

In addition to these events the Halifax & Region MFRC also participates in a large number of briefings throughout the year both within the local Department of National Defence and externally within the community at a variety of locations. Volunteers are always welcome to assist with the assembly and distribution of information at these briefings.

Getting started: Determine the size of your group, type of activity you would like to consider, and which site(s) you wish to volunteer at (Halifax, Shearwater or Sydney). Once you have done that please contact Volunteer Services at 902-427-7205 or 720-2002 or e-mail volunteer@halifaxmfrc.ca
